“5, 4, 3, 2, 1 — Happy New Year!” How did you ring in 2014? In front of the TV surrounded by loved ones watching the ball drop? Out dancing? Toasting champagne with friends? Reno resident Karissa Roa had an evening she’ll never forget, but the New Year was furthest from her mind. Karissa was at Renown Children’s Hospital focused intently on delivering her second child. Doctors and nurses counted down the New Year in her room as Karissa worked through the last leg of her 12-hour labor. Twenty-nine minutes later her daughter was born.
Beautiful Brylee arrived happy and healthy, weighing in at 5 lbs. 13.5 ozs. and measuring 17.25 inches. Father Michael and 4-year-old brother Isaac couldn’t be more proud. Karissa, for her part, is doing well after delivering Brylee and is thrilled all went well with her birth, especially given that the baby arrived just a bit early.
Due January 4, her physician decided it was necessary to induce Karissa early, which came as a bit of a surprise. But the best gifts are often the biggest surprises, and in this case the unexpected gave way to a New Year’s baby. And there’s not just one holiday baby in the family — dad Michael’s birthday is Christmas day. Karissa says everyone at the hospital made it fun; the room was decorated, baskets of baby goodies were waiting for the family and even a cake was delivered.
In 2013, 4,047 babies were born at Renown Children’s Hospital. The busiest day of the year was June 14, 2013, wherein Renown delivered 22 babies. And on January 1, Brylee ushered in New Year’s with eight other bundles of joy born that day. And what could be better than starting off a new year celebrating the miracle of life!
