Many parents know the importance of strapping children into a car seat every time they get into the car. What most don’t know is how important it is that the car seat be properly installed.
According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration three out of four car seats are incorrectly used or installed. An improperly used or installed car seat can result in severe injury or death to a child in a car accident. These statistics are not meant to frighten you, but rather they’re meant to convince you of the importance of proper car seat installation and safety.
Here are some tips we regularly provide parents when installing a car seat:
- Be sure the car seat is designed for the age and size of the child riding in it.
- Be sure the child is strapped snugly into the seat and that the seat is securely installed in the car. The car seat should not move more than one inch front-to-back or side-to-side at the seat belt path.
